Zygomatic Implants in Houston, TX

Told you can't get implants because of severe bone loss in your upper jaw? Zygomatic implants may be the answer. These specialized implants anchor into the cheekbone (zygoma) instead of the jawbone, making full mouth implants possible — even without bone grafting.

How Zygomatic Implants Work

Standard dental implants are placed in the jawbone (maxilla). But when significant bone loss has occurred in the upper jaw — from years of missing teeth, long-term denture wear, or advanced periodontal disease — there may not be enough jawbone left to support traditional implants.

Zygomatic implants solve this by anchoring into the zygomatic bone — your cheekbone. The cheekbone is dense, thick, and doesn't resorb the way the jawbone does. It provides a stable foundation even when the upper jaw can't.

The implants are longer than standard implants (30-50mm vs. 10-15mm for traditional) and are angled through the upper jaw into the cheekbone. Once placed, they support a full arch of fixed teeth the same way All-on-4 or All-on-X implants do.

The result is permanent, fixed upper teeth — without the months of bone grafting and healing that would otherwise be required.

When Zygomatic Implants Are the Right Option

Zygomatic implants are specifically for upper jaw cases where bone loss is too severe for standard implants. You may be a candidate if:

  • You've been told you don't have enough bone for upper implants
  • You've worn an upper denture for years and the jawbone has significantly resorbed
  • You want to avoid bone grafting and the additional 6-12 months of healing it requires
  • You have severe upper jaw bone loss from periodontal disease
  • Previous bone grafting attempts have failed

Zygomatic implants are not needed for every case. Most patients with upper jaw bone loss can be treated with All-on-4's angled implant approach or with bone grafting. Zygomatic implants are reserved for the most severe cases where those options won't work.

Dr. Azer evaluates your specific bone situation with a 3D scan and recommends the most appropriate approach. If standard implants or bone grafting can get the job done, he'll tell you. Zygomatic implants are recommended only when they're truly the best option.

What to Expect

1

3D Evaluation

Dr. Azer takes a cone beam CT scan to map your upper jaw and cheekbone anatomy in detail. He determines whether zygomatic implants are needed or whether standard implants or bone grafting would work.

2

Treatment Planning

Using guided surgery software, Dr. Azer plans the exact trajectory of each zygomatic implant through the upper jaw into the cheekbone. Standard implants may also be placed in the front of the jaw where bone is available — creating a combination approach.

3

Surgery

Zygomatic implants are placed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure takes longer than standard All-on-4 due to the complexity of the implant trajectory. Temporary fixed teeth are attached the same day.

4

Healing (3-6 Months)

The implants integrate with the cheekbone. Your temporary teeth are functional during this period.

5

Permanent Teeth

Once healed, your final restoration — zirconia or high-grade acrylic — is placed.

Why Zygomatic Implants Require Advanced Training

Zygomatic implant placement is one of the most technically demanding procedures in implant dentistry. The implants pass through the upper jaw near the sinus cavity and anchor into the cheekbone at precise angles. There is very little room for error.

This procedure requires:

  • Deep understanding of the anatomy of the maxilla, sinus, and zygomatic bone
  • Expertise in 3D treatment planning and guided surgery
  • Surgical training beyond what's covered in general implant courses

Dr. Azer's training as a board-certified periodontist — with a surgical residency at Boston University and international teaching experience in implant placement — gives him the background to handle these complex cases. He's placed over 1,000 implants and works with patients referred by other dentists and specialists for cases that require this level of expertise.
